DIY KOUKARA

DIY KOUKARA

Posted by Panagiota Andreadakis on 17th Feb 2023

Koukara is a Clean Monday (Σαχταροδευτέρα) tradition from Pontos, that is used as a Lenten calendar.

The Koukara was traditionally made using either a potato or onion, with seven chicken or rooster feathers poked into it, six of which were dark and the seventh was white, symbolising Holy Week.

It was hung from the ceiling, and one feather was removed each week of Lent.

Did you know? The Koukara was used to scare children so they wouldn’t break the Lenten fast.

'HOW TO' DIY KOUKARA

1. Use a clean potato or onion.

2. Stick seven feathers into the potato or onion.

3. Draw or carve a face onto the front.

4. Tie a piece of string around the koukara and hang from the ceiling or a safe place at home.

Reminder: Remove one feather every Saturday during Great Lent.
