Learn with Stelakis: National Flag of Greece
The National Flag of Greece, most commonly referred to as the 'Blue and White' (Γαλανόλευκη), has nine horizontal stripes alternating in blue and white.
The nine stripes are said to represent the letters of the word 'FREEDOM' (Ελευθερία).
The Nine Stripes are also said to represent the nine syllables of the phrase 'Freedom or Death' (Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος), the five blue stripes for the syllables Ελευθερία and the four white stripes ή Θάνατος.
The white cross symbolises Greek Orthodoxy, and the colour blue represents Greece's sea and sky.
